Expressionism refers to a literary term originally used to describe the early 12th-century German painting school. Expressionists were the dramatists like George Kaiser, Ernst Toller, Luigi Pirandello, Federico Garcia Lorca, Eugene O'Neill, Elmer Rice; poets like George Heym, Ernst Stadler, August Stramm, Gottfried Benn, Georg Trakl; novelists like Franz Kafka and James Joyce.
